Your Habits and Rituals Determine Your Destiny

Recently I was speaking to a gentleman who asked me, “How often do I need to work on my success habits?” You might be surprised to know that this is a very common question from my coaching clients.

I paused initially, not wanting to show my obvious shock to his question. After gathering myself I replied with asking a question of my own, “Well, how often do you exercise? He said without pause…” Everyday!” In which I replied “Why?” He countered by saying, “Well if I don’t stay on a regular routine, it becomes easy for me to get out of the habit and I won’t achieve my health and fitness goals.” My response, “How is your psychological fitness any different?”

Times Have Changed

It wasn’t long ago, perhaps just a generation or two when exercise was for people who were playing sports professionally and recreationally. Not to get fit and stay fit. People weren’t going to gym’s unless they were a body builder. There were no Yoga rooms, CrossFit Gym’s, cycle clubs, marathons and the near endless list of ways people now exercise daily. What changed? Mindset and lifestyle.

40 years ago, most people worked some kind of physical labor. The thought of working out after putting in a 10-hour day seemed preposterous. Fast forward to today, most work a sedentary job. We can debate if technology has improved our life or not but the unmistakable truth is we have gotten softer and heavier as we sit more now than ever.

Our entire cultural mindset shifted as work and our lifestyle changed. We realized if we didn’t turn this trend around our health would continue to decline. We were going to have to become more intentional with our fitness. You can’t drive a block in most neighborhoods without seeing all kinds of fitness centers full of active people of all ages. This is a great thing!

Our actions shape our culture. Regular fitness is now the norm, a huge shift over the past 40 yrs.

The Next Big Shift

It is my belief we are in the middle of the next big cultural shift. One where we now understand that working on our mindset is also something we need to do daily. Our mindset, thoughts, emotions and feelings are a choice. At one time meditation was thought to be something weird for the new agers. Not anymore! Meditation is being taught by therapists, hospitals and by every self-help guru. Writing affirmations and visualization is now being espoused by the world’s most famous athletes.

It is my opinion that poverty is a mental disease. In other words, our thoughts create a scarcity mindset that keeps us trapped in perpetual poverty. There are of course other factors that contribute to poverty but there are thousands of stories of people who have transcended their environment once they changed their thoughts.

Research has shown that people who are actively engaged in regular habits and daily mindset rituals, experience more joy and happiness and significantly less stress. They have reported improved finances and opportunities as well as better relationships. I think 20 years from now, we will look back and wonder why people didn’t do daily psychological exercise.

Personal development is the habits and rituals you commit to that helps you transcend your subconscious mind. It is intentional and when practiced regularly throughout your lifetime will provide you the mindset that can help achieve all your goals and dreams.
