Why Poor Leadership Might Be Your Organizations Problems

I often write about the importance of leadership and if you have read any of my past blog posts on leadership, you know that I believe “all success in life and business rises and falls on leadership.”

If you’re experiencing any challenges in life, to overcome those challenge requires taking responsibility for your situation. That’s personal leadership which is internal. In fact, there are three levels of leadership formulated by James Scouller in 2011. Let’s discuss each briefly.

Public & Private – The first two are outward forms of leadership. It is the ability to influence 2 or more people simultaneously. There are 34 characteristics of these two types.

A few examples would be…A shared motivating group purpose or vision, communication and listening skills, action oriented and decisiveness, staying focused and prioritizing behavior, problem solver, passionate, emotionally engaging and vulnerability. These qualities just begin to scratch the surface. The key here though is the ability to influence others.

Personal – Is inner level leadership. This refers to what leaders do to grow their leadership presence. Of the three levels personal is the most important because if you’re unable to lead yourself you have no business leading others. Personal leadership concerns a person’s presence, knowhow, skills, beliefs, emotions and unconscious habits. At its heart, is self-awareness, his or her progress towards self-mastery and technical competence, and a sense of connection with those around you.” Self-mastery is the key to growing one’s leadership presence.

Author Richard Flint said, “Behavior never lies.” This is never truer when it comes to becoming a great leader. People are more apt to watch what you do rather than listen to what you say. Incongruent words and actions will inevitably undermine leadership.

On this week’s podcast episode, Podcast Episode 17 Dr. Eddie and I have a very real and raw conversation on leadership and culture.

Here is what you will learn on this week’s show:

1. All success in life is based on strong and effective leadership

If you are struggling with a lack of clarity, focus, vision, accomplishing goals, relationships, finances, constant stress, conflict, high turnover rates at the workplace, mistrust, and/or disrespect these are all signs of sub-par leadership skills.

2. Qualities and Characteristics

We will define for you the most important qualities and characteristics of successful leaders so we can help you ascertain which of these qualities you may need to start working on

3. 7 Key Steps

We will define what culture is and review the 7 key steps to help you turn around a toxic culture. Even if you are an employee.

4. Leadership and Culture

Finally, we will discuss why leadership and culture are intrinsically related to the foundation of every successful business, organization, and family. Yes! Your family has a culture. Do you want better relationships with your significant other, spouse, kids? Then you must learn the importance personal leadership.

I am more convinced then ever before that most businesses and organizations struggle to achieve their desired goals because of poor leadership. Over the years, I have invested a lot of time studying leadership. What I have found is many people in positions of leadership were thrust into their role. They have never had any formal training or education on leadership and therefore they are just winging it! And their organizations and businesses suffer as a result.

Leadership is a learned skill, it’s not inherent. If you desire to expand your knowledge and understand the necessary skill sets, then be sure to check out our show on leadership and culture, it will provide you the tools and resources to elevate your leadership to help you empower your dreams, ignite your passion, and accelerate your prosperity.
